A man was found fatally shot inside a car on Thursday morning near 26th Street and Shea Boulevard in Phoenix, according to police officials.

Neighbors called police about gunshots fired around 5 a.m. on Cheryl Drive and found nothing at first, according to Detective Luis Samudio, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Then a second call came in about 7:25 a.m. about a vehicle, a gray Dodge, that had damage from gunfire. Inside the car, police found the body.

Police did not reveal the man’s name.

Police do not yet know if the person in the Dodge car lived in the neighborhood. The car has California license plates.

A neighbor said nothing like the shooting had happened in the area before.

“I always feel safe here, that’s why we moved here,” said Diane Meyer, who has lived there for more than 25 years.

Another neighbor, Janet Daspit, said she walks around the neighborhood every morning, and for the past few months, she has seen the car parked in the same spot with a person sleeping in it.

A suspect description was not immediately available.
