Police are searching for a man who fired a gun toward an officer after shooting another man Friday afternoon, the Glendale Police Department said.

Glendale police Detective Mark Coyle said an officer was responding to an unrelated call and noticed a group of people fighting near 63rd and Missouri avenues.

When the officer approached, Coyle said, a man drew a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking another man involved in the fight.

Coyle said the man fired shots in the officer’s direction and the officer fired back as the man fled the scene.

The officer wasn’t hit and it’s unclear whether the man fleeing was struck, Coyle said.

Coyle said police have “a few subjects detained” and that the additional suspect remained outstanding as of 6 p.m. Friday. Police did not identify any suspects.

The man who was shot was transported to the hospital, but the extent of his injuries was unknown, Coyle said Friday evening.

That area of 63rd Avenue was shut down between Missouri and San Juan avenues, according to police.

Further details were not immediately available.

An investigation is ongoing.
