A man is dead after a wrong-way collision caused his vehicle to tumble over the Interstate 17 transition ramp in Phoenix early Thursday morning.

Around 2:45 a.m., a vehicle turned wrong-way from the eastbound Interstate 10 to the northbound I-17 ramp and collided head-on with a commercial truck, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The passenger vehicle went over the wall and fell into a landscaping area between the northbound I-17 and westbound I-10, said Kameron Lee, DPS public information officer.

The wrong-way driver died while the commercial truck driver had no reported injuries.

Another vehicle struck debris from the fallen wrong-way vehicle, but no injuries were reported, according to Lee.

DPS said Interstate 10 ramps to north I-17 are closed.

Lee said they hope to have the roadway open around 7:30 a.m and that there are several tow trucks arriving to assist the affected vehicles.

There is no identity for the deceased man available at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
