Border patrol officers chased down a man who attempted to cross into Mexico on foot from Arizona with a loaded firearm Saturday, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested the 27-year-old Douglas man after he tried to run as agents attempted to stop him for questioning, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in a press release.

The suspect was caught in Douglas and searched, officials said. Officers found a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun in his possession, loaded with nine bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber, officials said.

The suspect was  turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.
