A man severely burned in a diesel tanker explosion in Sonora died of his injuries before he could be airlifted to Tucson for care.
Salvador Valenzuela Carrizoza died Friday in a hospital in Hermosillo, Sonora.
His wife, Vanessa Mariles, works for Pima County. They have an 18-month-old daughter. Their family had sought help to raise money for his medical expenses.
The truck Valenzuela was driving overturned and exploded Sunday about 138 miles southwest of the U.S.-Mexico border between Caborca and popular tourist destination Puerto Peñasco, known to many Arizonans as Rocky Point.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Valenzuela, who was driving the truck for Grupo Moncar del Desierto, was pulled from the burning truck by passers-by and taken to a hospital in Hermosillo.
Valenzuela’s wife thanked the community for efforts to help crowdfund for the medical bills and airlift.
“I want to express my sincerest gratitude for all of the prayers I have received. I also want to express my appreciation for everyone’s generosity,” read a statement from Mariles posted on the GoFundMe account.
“I am so grateful for the outpouring of love and support and kindness from everyone. Continue to be kind to one another and spread love. Please know I will pay your kindness forward.”
According to Mariles, plans called for Valenzuela to be transported Saturday to Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, where treatment for his injuries would have continued. Valenzuela suffered second- and third-degree burns on over 60% of his body in the explosion.
“My dear husband Sal was a fighter and a loving soul. I know he had the will to survive and fought hard every second these past few days for me and our daughter. But his body was tired and weak and could no longer fight,” Mariles wrote.
Donations made to the GoFundMe will be used to pay the hospital bills and cover funeral expenses.
