A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting his sister’s former boyfriend during a Friday confrontation in Phoenix, police said.
Officers responded to a scene near 1900 W. Pima St. at around 10 a.m. on Friday after receiving reports of a shooting, Phoenix police spokeswoman Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said.
They saw several people running through the apartment complex before being directed to the shooting victim, 42-year-old Bobby Vaughn.
Vaughn was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed that Vaughn reportedly assaulted his former girlfriend and was then confronted by the woman’s brother, 37-year-old Tarron La’Mar Wooten, Fortune said.
During the confrontation, Wooten shot Vaughn and attempted to flee as officers responded, Fortune said.
Officers found Wooten at a nearby residence and arrested him. While conducting several search warrants, detectives found that Wooten’s mother, 61-year-old Glenda Hollaway, had attempted to destroy evidence related to the murder, Fortune said.
Wooten was booked into the Maricopa County Jail for murder, while Hollaway was booked for tampering with evidence.
No further details were immediately available.
