Grand Canyon got a commitment out of rival New Mexico State’s backyard with Las Cruces High School senior-to-be Isaiah Carr announcing his pledge on social media on Monday.

In 14 games his junior year, Carr, 6-foot-11, averaged 14.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.9 blocks during an abbreviated COVID-19-delayed spring high school basketball season.

Carr posted a picture in his commitment of himself in a photoshopped GCU uniform surrounded by a desert landscape with a crossroads street sign that has Phoenix and Las Cruces and a purple GCU atop the bluffs.

Carr is the first commitment from the 2022 class for GCU coach Bryce Drew.

“Coach Drew I feel is an amazing coach with a lot of fun experience with his staff,” Carr said. “The thing that stood out to me was the beautiful campus and the basketball arena.

“I chose GCU because of the culture and the new legacy that Coach Drew wants to build. The coaches and players are men of faith and they coach with biblical principles.”
