The Queen Creek man who allegedly tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend and killed the man she was with at Wild Horse Pass Casino last week used a tracking device to find her before hiding in her car for nearly an hour, court documents said.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. on April 15 in a parking garage near the Chandler casino. Surveillance video showed Jonathan Lorenz, 37, arriving at the casino at 1 a.m. in a silver Dodge Durango. He is then seen walking into the parking garage, up the stairs to the third floor and then over to a white pickup truck around 1:17 a.m.

He laid down in the truck bed to hide.

Around 2 a.m., Lorenz’s ex-girlfriend and Philip Bachelder, 52, were seen on video walking to the truck. Lorenz jumped up from the bed and fired at Bachelder, striking him. As the woman ran from the truck, documents state Lorenz chased her while firing multiple shots.

Gila River Police officers were already at the casino investigating a report of a stolen car when they heard the gunshots, documents said. Officers fired at Lorenz and he fired back but didn’t strike anyone. He was finally stopped by a taser and taken into custody, according to documents.

Bachelder was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman and officers were not injured.

Detectives later learned Lorenz and the woman were recently broken up after a yearlong relationship. Lorenz had allegedly shown up at the woman’s house multiple times unannounced previously.

She also told police he had recently damaged her car and she was driving his pickup truck. Lorenz had an app on his phone to track the truck, which was how he knew she was at the casino.

Lorenz was booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.
