Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World has been thinking of doing his own podcast for a while now.

And with the concert industry on hold, this seems as good a time as any.

“Pass-Through Frequencies” is a video/audio podcast series that features the singer engaging his fellow musicians in conversations about writing songs and other things as they arise. It debuts Thursday, Aug. 6, on Jimmy Eat World’s official YouTube channel.

“I guess I have always been fascinated,” Adkins says, “by the mechanics of the creative process. Especially how you choose to interact with something that feels beyond yourself. You have to be fully present to contribute, but if you are too self-aware the inspiration vanishes.”

It’s a tricky balance, Adkins says. “Like guiding your own meditation.”

There are no rules for writing songs, he says.

“Only suggestions based on evolving tastes. Everyone learns for themselves what they like by doing it. There are some similarities with methods, but no one is going to do the real heavy lifting for you. You are the only one who decides when your effort is over. When what you’ve done works or needs another pass.”

These are the types of ideas he’ll be bouncing off musician friends, many of whom may have completely different ways of looking at the process.

They’ll talk about more than songwriting

“Songwriting is just the jumping-off point for the conversations I have with guests,” he says. “And a lot of the people I am talking to in this first batch of episodes are people I have some kind of history with. So old times and life things come up.”

The series is set to premiere Thursday, Aug. 6, with Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus.

New episodes will follow each Tuesday and Thursday.

Adkins was supposed to be on tour for much of 2020 in support of last year’s excellent “Surviving,” Jimmy Eat World’s 10th studio effort.

Instead, he’s coming up with new ideas to explore his creativity with all that extra time at home.

“I am just taking it as it comes,” he says. “Pretty much written off performing in any sense that meets what we are used to until late next year at earliest. So I am just trying to look at it all for the opportunities instead of the dread of expectations missed.”
