Defensive back Davontae Merriweather is rejoining the Rattlers to help them in their push to the Indoor Football League United Bowl.

Merriweather was the IFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 when the Rattlers went undefeated before losing their only game to the Sioux Falls Storm 56-53 in the United Bowl in Glendale.

With two injuries in the secondary, the Rattlers gave up six touchdown passes in a 60-48 win over the Duke City Gladiators last Saturday, after which coach Kevin Guy said that changes would be coming.

Merriweather, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, is a hybrid linebacker/defensive back from West Texas A&M. In 2019, he tied for the league lead with 71 solo tackles. He also had four interceptions, 12 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries.

“We have a need after having a couple of injuries in the secondary,” said Guy, who also is the team’s general manager. “The timing worked out for both sides.

“Merriweather has been a solid player for us in the past and he can certainly come in and play right away.”

The Rattlers, who have the best record in the IFL at 9-2,  host the Tucson Sugar Skulls on Sunday at 3 p.m. They have three regular-season games remaining, before starting the eight-team playoffs.
