A hiker’s body was found in Boynton Canyon near Sedonaafter suffering what authorities believe to have been an accidental fall of more than 100 feet.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday that deputies found the body of 29-year-old Jordan Brashears who was reported as an overdue hiker by two companions who had lost sight of him during a hike on Oct. 8.

The companions said the three planned on exploring ancient ruins in the canyon and were approximately half a mile from the Enchantment Resort on the canyon’s east wall when Brashears went ahead of them.

The companions told authorities that Brashears was hiking barefoot and disappeared after he rounded a corner. They searched for Brashears and called out his name for about an hour before calling the Sheriff’s Office.

A group of searchers and a Sheriff’s Office forest patrol deputy searched for Brashears into the evening but failed to find evidence of his whereabouts.

The search resumed on Oct. 9 with people searching on the ground, by air and with a drone, and one of Brashears’ companions found a water jug belonging to the missing hiker. Members of a Sheriff’s Office search team inspected the area further and found a pair of shoes, a cell phone and ultimately Brashears’ body around 9 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies believe Brashears hiked around a corner from the last place he was seen and tried climbing another ledge or two before falling from the edge. Investigators don’t believe Brashears intended to do this or that foul play was involved.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
