After three hours and 38 minutes, 14 runs, 22 hits, 319 pitches, nine pitching changes, three double switches, a 100-mph fastball to end an inning and countless mound meetings, it was 10:32 p.m. when Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo finally sat down at the podium for his postgame press conference.
“One of those nights a little frustrating for a lot of reasons,” Lovullo said after Arizona’s 8-6 loss to Milwaukee that snapped the Diamondbacks’ three-game winning streak.
Among those reasons:
Starter Randall Delgado, who had allowed just two earned runs combined in his previous two starts, was rocked for three runs by the Brewers in the first inning. Delgado lasted five innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs, an outing that Lovullo called “OK.”

“He had the difficult first inning against a team that has been very good traditionally over the past month in the first inning,” Lovullo said.
With Taijuan Walker due to come back in the next few days from a finger blister, Lovullo was asked if Delgado would remain in the starting rotation.
“We’ll probably continue to talk about this, but I think we’re looking at Randall as a guy that can stay in the starting rotation,” Lovullo said. “I know today wasn’t his best outing, but I know there’s going to be these moments for every starting pitcher, and we’re not just going to run over one bad start and say that’s it.”
Delgado said he was missing his spots in the first quarter and the “consequence was giving up three runs. Just a couple of mistakes in the first inning.”
The offense, meanwhile, couldn’t come up with a big hit after Jake Lamb’s three-run homer in the bottom of the first, his 16th of the year, tied the game at 3-3. The Diamondbacks had the bases loaded in the seventh with two outs only to have Nick Ahmed swing at the first pitch and weakly ground out to the pitcher.
Lovullo said he thought the Diamondbacks “ran out of gas,” in trying to come back from the three-run deficit and then a 8-4 deficit after the Brewers scored two in the top of the seventh.
“We just couldn’t close the gap offensively,” Lovullo said.
Credit that in part to Milwaukee’s defense. The Brewers made several spectacular plays, none bigger than the one second baseman Jonathan Villar made in the eighth inning. Brandon Drury led off the inning with a ground-rule double and Chris Herrmann followed with a shot that looked like it would get into right center, score Drury and cut the Brewers lead to one. But Villar dove hard to his left, speared the ball and got up just in time to throw Herrmann out at first.
After the throw, Villar fell to the ground. He was eventually taken off the field in a car. The Brewers say he had back spasms but would also undergo X-rays.
Milwaukee closer Corey Knebel made sure there would be no comeback, retiring all four batters he faced, including strikeouts of David Peralta, Lamb and Chris Owings. The last pitch to Peralta, to end the eighth, was the 100 mph fastball.

Godley is back in the starting rotation after being sent to the minors because the Diamondbacks needed an extra bullpen arm on their 11-game road trip. He hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his six starts, and he was brilliant against the Brewers on May 26, throwing six innings of scoreless ball and getting the win. Guerra was on the mound for Milwaukee that day and held Arizona to just three hits and one earned run over 5 2/3 innings.
