Even the NCAA doesn’t know what a catch is.

As ASU attempted a comeback for the ages on Saturday night, a targeting call has Sun Devil fans — and just about everyone on Twitter this late — up in arms.

With the Sun Devils down 7 on fourth and 10 with 14 seconds left, Manny Wilkins threw the ball downfield to receiver Frank Darby, who appeared to catch it at the San Diego State 2-yard line before he was drilled by an Aztec defender.

What ensued was confusion on all sides of the equation.

Upon review, a targeting penalty was assessed, but — here’s the kicker — Darby’s pass was ruled incomplete as a result.

The penalty gave ASU one more last-ditch effort, but the Hail Mary into the end zone was batted down and the Sun Devils suffered their first loss of the season.

After the game, Darby told reporters, “No doubt in my mind I caught that pass and I came down. That was a grown man catch.”

Afterward on Twitter, college football fans and pundits had a difficult time comprehending why Darby’s apparent catch was wiped out after the targeting penalty.

Don’t worry, we didn’t know what was going on either.
