Former Arizona State quarterback Jack Smith has found a landing spot, transferring to Division II Central Washington.
Smith, the son of ASU baseball coach Tracy Smith, reportedly found his landing spot at Central Washington through new offensive coordinator Zak Hill, who played there.
Smith, a 6-foot-1, 164-pounder, has three years of eligibility remaining and was no doubt looking for playing time, with sophomore Jayden Daniels having a firm grip on the ASU starter’s job although Smith was a candidate for the backup role.
Smith first played for Arizona State in 2016 after starring as a quarterback at Phoenix Mountain Pointe High School. He finished his prep career with 6,396 yards and 65 touchdowns to go with 1,573 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.
The Sun Devils had to use all of their scholarship quarterbacks due to injury, eventually turning to Smith who threw a 40-yard pass in a 37-32 loss to Washington State.

He was sidelined for three years with a back injury sustained during a summer workout but returned to the team healthy again in February and participated in seven spring practices that were held in March before the shutdown due to the coronavirus.
Central Washington went 7-4 last season, including a 5-1 mark and share of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The school is based in Ellensburg.
The GNAC and Central Washington are in a holding pattern because of the global health pandemic with no timetable for a return to the field. Last season the Wildcats had two quarterbacks with freshman Canon Racanelli and sophomore Christian Moore, competing.
Moore untimely took over starting duties in the final six games and earned second-team GNAC honors. Racanelli is also back but is transitioning to defensive back. Smith will also see competition from redshirt freshmen JJ Lemming and Quincy Glasper, along with senior Braden Miles, who appeared in one game in 2019.
Smith’s departure will likely leave incoming freshman Daylin McLemore and sophomore walk on Trenton Bourquet as the candidates to be Daniels’ understudy. Bourquet has been serving as the scout team quarterback.
