A former town clerk was sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than $32,000 from Pinetop-Lakeside, officials said.
Leah Chavez, 40, was sentenced Wednesday morning after she pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of misuse of public monies, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office said.
In 2016, Chavez charged about $13,000 on a Pinetop-Lakeside credit card for personal shopping, car payments, and home landscaping, officials said. She also stole more than $8,000 in cash from the town in another instance, then wired herself more than $9,000, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement released Wednesday.
The AG’s office did not provide details about the additional $2,000 taken.
As part of her plea agreement, Chavez will need to pay back the $32,000 she spent in restitution to Pinetop-Lakeside, officials said.
After being released from prison, she will be placed on probation for four years, officials said.
