Ethan David Law, an 11-year-old boy from Chandler, died Tuesday after a watercraft crash at Sand Hollow State Park in Utah.
Ethan and five others were involved in an accident at Sand Hollow reservoir when two personal watercrafts crashed into each other at about 1:15 p.m. on Monday, according to a statement from Utah State Parks on Wednesday.
Each of the two watercrafts carried one adult and two children, including Ethan. All six people were wearing life jackets, the statement said.
The collision threw three people, a father and two children, off one vessel and into the water.
A group that witnessed the incident from the beach rushed to offer help. They brought the father and two children back to shore where they performed first aid and CPR until Utah State Park rangers and emergency responders arrived and took them to a local hospital, the statement said.
Ethan died from his injuries the next day. The father and other child suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said.
Park rangers expressed their sympathy and reminded visitors to practice safe protocols when operating water vessels.
“The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation extends our condolences to the family and friends impacted by this tragedy,” the statement said. “Boaters are reminded that Utah Law requires vessels to remain a minimum of 150-feet away from one another when operating above a wakeless speed.”
The crash remains under investigation.
