A driver struck and killed a 61-year-old pedestrian crossing Washington Street near 43rd Street mid-block Friday evening, Phoenix police said Saturday.

Vernon Crawford was crossing the road just before 10 p.m. on Friday when a 32-year-old driver in a 2010 Kia Forte struck him, police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

The Phoenix Fire Department transported Crawford to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver remained on scene and rendered aid to Crawford, Thompson said, adding that impairment was not believed to be a factor in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.
