Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers netted the largest meth seizure in the agency’s history during a traffic stop Thursday.
According to a statement from the agency, Luis Adrian Sonoqui, 29, was stopped for a traffic violation near 20th Street and Greenway Road. Troopers found $2.5 million worth of drugs including 50,000 fentanyl pills, 35 pounds of cocaine and 464 pounds of methamphetamine during a search of his car.
Sonoqui was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail on suspicion of drug possession and a slew of other charges.
DPS has recovered large quantities of drugs in multiple high-profile cases this year.
In January, a couple en-route to Utah were caught with 362 pounds of meth in their vehicle. It was the single largest meth recovery ever made by DPS at the time.
In mid-March, DPS recovered more than 75 pounds of meth in two separate traffic stops along the Interstate 10 in the western and southern parts of the state.
