On the mound: LHP Patrick Corbin allowed a leadoff single to Delino DeShields to open the game and then retired the next 15 batters he faced at Salt River Fields as he breezed through his easiest outing of spring training. Utilizing primarily a fastball and a slider that he kept well down in the strike zone, Corbin pitched five dominating innings and left having allowed the one hit with no walks and five strikeouts. He threw 56 pitches, 42 of them for strikes. “It felt great. I feel like every time I’m out there the arm just feels better and better,” Corbin said. “I feel like it’s coming out easy and I’m able to hit my spots.” Corbin said he felt strong enough to pitch a sixth additional inning, if needed. “So that’s a positive,” he said. “Just throwing strikes, something I did struggle with last year. That’s a big thing and it was my mindset coming into this spring.”

At the plate: 1B Chris Herrmann, SS Nick Ahmed and 2B Brandon Drury each went 3 for 3 as Arizona pounded out 17 hits and chased Rangers starter Chi Chi Gonzalez during a seven-run third inning. Drury had two doubles and drove in two runs. RF David Peralta added a two-run single. C Chris Iannetta led off the second inning with a home run, his first of Cactus League play. He also walked and scored a run. 3B Ildemaro Vargas and CF Chris Owings hit eighth-inning home runs.

Extra bases: Right-hander Zack Greinke’s fastball topped out at 91 mph during his five innings of back-field work on Monday and a day later manager Torey Lovullo said that like any pitcher who gets a bit of a late start in spring training, it takes a while to build up to where they normally would be. “I’m not really concerned about Zack at this point,” he said Tuesday. Asked if Greinke can still succeed if his velocity doesn’t pick up, Lovullo paused and said, “I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about that. But if I were a betting man, I know that he’s going to find a way no matter what. When he’s competing every fifth day, he’s going to find a way to beat you. That much I do know about Zack.”

Wednesday’s game: Diamondbacks RHP Taijuan Walker vs. Cubs RHP Kyle Hendricks, 7:05 p.m., Sloan Park, Mesa.
