Robbie Ray’s run of dominance has transformed even his superiors into awestruck bystanders, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo went so far as to coin a term for the art of witnessing what his left-hander is going to do next: Robbie Watching.

“I’ve become a fan, too,” Lovullo said after Ray’s latest overpowering performance on Sunday, in which he tossed 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball in an 11-1 throttling of the Milwaukee Brewers at Chase Field.

“I’m just watching in amazement at what he can do. He’s basically said, ‘Boys, get on my back and let’s go to work.’ ”

BOX SCORE: Diamondbacks 11, Brewers 1

Ray struck out a season-high 12, the third consecutive game in which he reached double-digits in strikeouts. He leaned more heavily on his offspeed pitches, eliciting a whopping 17 swings and misses on his breaking balls.

As far as recent Ray starts go, he seemed slightly more susceptible to damage this time, but he didn’t just find his way out of trouble – he kicked in the door to escape. The Brewers had six at-bats with a runner in scoring position against Ray. They struck out in five of them.

“I’m just going out there and trying to put up zeroes,” Ray said. “I’m not really worried about the strikeouts, knowing that they’re going to come. But it’s great, to keep guys off the bases is huge.”

In five starts since May 20, Ray has thrown 37 innings, allowed one earned run and held opponents to 14 hits in 122 at-bats. That works out to a 0.24 ERA and a .115 opponents’ average and a .346 OPS against.

The average major league pitcher is hitting .123 with a .312 OPS – so, in essence, Ray has reduced the teams he’s faced during this run – the Brewers twice, the Padres twice, the Pirates once – into a collection of hitting pitchers.

“I think Robbie would tell you the same thing, he’s starting to come into his own a little bit; he’s starting to figure it out,” Diamondbacks reliever Archie Bradley said. “But the signs have been there. I think we all can say that.

“It’s a testament to him and the guys he’s worked with. You look at this string of starts he’s on, I know that for us, I know when Robbie walks into the clubhouse it’s like, hey, we’ve got a chance to win today. We’re going to do something good today.”

The Diamondbacks entered Sunday with the fourth-best rotation ERA in the National League, and they’re about to get one of their top arms back. Lovullo said Sunday morning that tentative plans call for right-hander Taijuan Walker to make his long-awaited return from blister issues on Wednesday in Detroit; Walker had a 3.46 ERA in 52 innings before landing on the disabled list last month.

Walker’s return, in essence, triggered the decision to designate reliever Tom Wilhelmsen for assignment, a move that Lovullo seemed pained to have to make. Wilhelmsen’s spot in the bullpen will go to either right-hander Randall Delgado or right-hander Zack Godley, both of whom have thrown well as starters in recent weeks.

Lovullo valued what the veteran Wilhelmsen brought to the clubhouse in terms of leadership and personality. But he hadn’t been throwing as well as some of his teammates, something that Lovullo viewed as a positive.

“When you have tough situations or tough conversations because of their success, you know you’ve got a good organization,” he said. “And that’s what we have here. We’ve got depth.”

They’re not just deep, they’re strong at the top. Zack Greinke is pitching more like his old ace self, and Ray seems to be progressing into that territory – or, at least, into the type of pitcher a team wouldn’t want to face in a playoff series.

Lovullo pointed to a sequence in the fifth inning, when Ray had a runner on third and one out for the top of the Brewers’ order and proceeded to strike out Lewis Brinson and Eric Thames, getting Brinson on a breaking ball in the dirt before pumping a 97 mph heater past Thames.

“I felt like when there was a man on third base and one out,” Lovullo said, “the feeling I had was, ‘I got this. I’m going to strike these two guys out. Nobody has to worry.’ He went out and executed and did his job.”
