The Diamondbacks are whittling down their options in the bullpen and are just a few days away from naming their full assortment of relievers. One of them, however, won’t be ready for Opening Day.

Right-hander Jake Barrett, projected to be a late-inning setup man, remains in a throwing program after developing shoulder stiffness earlier this spring and won’t be ready for Arizona’s opener against the Giants on April 2 at Chase Field.

Barrett is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Sunday, but there isn’t enough time to get him up to speed.

“His return to play is going to follow the natural process of ramping up to live BP, to games, to maybe some rehab appearances, so we’re not going to rush him,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “He’s such a valuable piece to this puzzle, we’re not going to rush.”

Another key component who might end up joining Barrett on the disabled list to start the season is outfielder Gregor Blanco, who is dealing with tightness in the right side of his body. Blanco, signed to a minor-league contract, is projected to be the team’s fourth outfielder.

“He’s not completely ready for a return-to-play program. We’re going to evaluate him day by day,” Lovullo said. “… Hopefully, we can get him on the field as soon as possible.”

Left fielder Yasmany Tomas, meanwhile, took some at-bats in a minor-league game on Saturday, and the hope is that he is able to play in a Cactus League game in the next couple of days. Tomas has been limited to six games this spring because of oblique and lower-back issues.

BICKLEY: D-Backs seeking relevance, momentum

Roster moves

The team optioned right-hander Zack Godley to Triple-A Reno and released right-hander Kevin Jepson, bringing the total number of players still in camp to 37.

“In both cases, they came in with great expectations and unfortunately Jep was banged up and had to miss some time and just never really could get going or moving in the right direction,” Lovullo said. “We’ll see what happens and where his career takes him and hopefully, our paths will cross again at some point in time.

“On the other hand, Godley threw the ball very, very well and made a very positive impression on everybody – me in particular. It’s just at this point in time we had to make some difficult decisions and go in a direction that didn’t include him. So he needs to get his work in, continue to throw the ball the way we know he can and hopefully, we see him at some point during the year.”

Lovullo said Godley might be used as both a starter and a reliever, which will make him that much more versatile to the parent club.

Bradley’s role undefined

A day after announcing his starting rotation and saying Archie Bradley had made the team but will start the season in the bullpen, Lovullo clarified the right-hander’s exact role has yet to be determined.

“This hasn’t been talked about. He made the team because we believe he is one of the best pieces that we fit into the bullpen, period,” Lovullo said. “Not that he is a long man or that he is going to be a seventh- or eighth-inning guy, but is he going to be one of the best guys that we would be able to take with us.

“If it fits in right now to a long (innings) role because he’s stretched out, so be it. But we’re going to utilize him just like we would any piece of the puzzle that’s sitting there at the end.”
