Lefty on lefty crime

Jake Lamb was dropped to seventh in the lineup Wednesday because of his struggles against left-handers. He was hitting .158 going into the game.

But in the bottom of the fifth he launched a two-run, opposite field homer off Chicago left-hander Jose Quintana to give the Diamondbacks a 4-2 lead. It was Lamb’s 13th homer of the year but his just second off a lefty.

Delgado goes 4

Manager Torey Lovullo said before the game that he hoped Randall Delgado, starting in place of the injured Taijuan Walker, could give the Diamondbacks four innings.

That’s exactly what Delgado has done. The White Sox lead 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth but Delgado has pitched effectively, allowing just three hits and one earned run. He’s thrown 58 pitches so it’s unlikely he’ll come back out for the fifth inning.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks haven’t had a single base-runner against Chicago’s Jose Quintana, who has struck out five in three innings of work.

That was, until Diamondbacks got up to bat in the bottom of the fourth.

Paul Goldschmidt continues to provide key at-bats for the Diamondbacks, and Wednesday afternoon was no different: Goldschmidt drove in Nick Ahmed and then scored from second on a Chris Owings hit.

Andrew Chafin came out of the bullpen to start the fifth inning.

Tomas out

Left fielder Yasmany Tomas was scratched from Wednesday’s game with tightness in his left hip. He was replaced in the lineup by Daniel Descalso, who will bat fifth. Losing Tomas means one less right-handed bat in the lineup against White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.

Pollock no go on road

Center fielder A.J. Pollock, on the disabled list with a right groin strain, will not join the Diamondbacks on their upcoming 11-game road trip.

Manager Torey Lovullo said Pollock, who was placed on the 10-day DL May 15, has done some light running but that the team doesn’t want to activate him until he’s completely healthy. Assuming Pollock doesn’t return until after the trip, the groin strain will have sidelined him for nearly three weeks.

“We want A.J. back as soon as possible,” Lovullo said. “We miss him. He’s one of the best players in the National League but until that time comes we’re not going to rush it.”

To be determined

Lovullo said no decision has been made as to who will start in place of the injured Taijuan Walker (finger blister) on Monday. The Diamondbacks could go with another “bullpen game” as they’re doing Wednesday with Randall Delgado starting, or call up a starter from the minor leagues. One possibility: Left-hander Anthony Banda, who started Tuesday for Triple-A Reno and allowed just one run in six innings while striking out eight.

Batting seventh …

Third baseman Jake Lamb was batting seventh in the order against White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana Wednesday and Lovullo said that’s likely where Lamb will stay against lefties for the time being.

Lamb was hitting .152 off left-handers before Wednesday’s game.

“I spoke to him about it and he’s on board with it,” Lovullo said. “We’ll leave him down there in the seven hole and let him continue growing and learning and when the time right to migrate him back up to the top of the lineup he’ll tell us what that time is by his results.”

Day off

Lovullo said reliever Archie Bradley would not be available for Wednesday’s game because he had pitched the previous two nights.

“I don’t feel comfortable with him throwing three days in a row because then we’re going to lose him for a couple of days,” Lovullo said.

Wednesday’s game

When: 12:40 p.m.

Where: Chase Field (Roof hotline: 602-462-6262).

Pitchers: Diamondbacks RHP Randall Delgado (1-0, 4.05 ERA) vs. White Sox LHP Jose Quintana (2-5, 3.92).

TV/Radio: FSAZ/KMVP-FM (98.7), KHOV-FM (105.1).

Delgado is making a spot start in place of Taijuan Walker (blister). His last start came Aug. 22, 2015. Delgado earned a save in his last outing, giving up a run over three innings in a 10-1 win at San Diego. In 26 2/3 innings, covering 15 appearances, he has struck out 24 and walked five. In five May outings, Delgado has allowed just one run. Manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday he does not have a pitch count in mind for Delgado, but Delgado has not pitched more than three innings in a game this season so he may not last long.  … Quintana has had some bad luck. His five losses tie for the second-most in baseball, yet his 2.20 run-support average is the lowest in the majors. In his last outing, he gave up one run on one hit over eight innings but did not factor into the decision in a 2-1 win at Seattle.

Wednesday’s lineup

Another matchup against a left-handed pitcher gives the Diamondbacks another chance to solve that conundrum. Jose Quintana’s presence also means Lamb gets dropped to seventh; Gregor Blanco returns to centerfield for the D-Backs.

Paul Goldschmidt got a fastball on the outside corner and nearly hit it out on Monday night, his drive down the right-field line barely going foul in the sixth inning.

The next pitch he saw was a fastball in, a relatively well-located pitch from White Sox right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, and Goldschmidt turned it on, launching it into the left field seats for a solo homer.

Goldschmidt has never really been anything but a tough out in the majors, but after a year in which his numbers dipped slightly, he is back to producing at an elite level.

Goldschmidt doesn’t offer much in terms of what’s changed from last year. This time a year ago, his average was hovering in the mid-.240s. He entered Tuesday hitting .315, and his .580 slugging is nearly 30 points better than his career best. He’s on pace for 38 homers; he hit just 24 last year.
