Pitching woes

Paul Goldschmidt knocked in a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, but the Diamondbacks found themselves in more trouble in the sixth.

The Brewers hit consecutive singles off reliever T.J. McFarland, then pinch-hitter Jesus Aguilar drove in two run with a double. The Brewers lead, 6-4, with no outs in the sixth.

Struggles return for Randall Delgado

After two shaky innings to open the game, Diamondbacks right hander Randall Delgado found a rhythm for the next two innings.

Now, that’s gone, too, and so is Delgado.

Brewers outfielder Hernan Perez hit a blast over the left field wall to put the Brewers ahead, 4-3, in the fifth inning. Delgado has thrown 92 pitches through five innings. Delgado was due up first this inning, but a change is being made. Jeremy Hazelbaker is pinch-hitting for Delgado.

The hits keep coming

Well, it’s not going to be a pitchers’ duel at Chase Field tonight. The Brewers scored three runs in the first inning off Arizona starter Randall Delgado, but the Diamondbacks came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a Jake Lamb three-run homer, his 16th of the year and RBIs Nos. 54, 55, and 56. Lamb’s blast scored Gregor Blanco, who reached on an error, and Paul Goldschmidt, who was hit by a pitch.

Walker update

Diamondbacks right-hander Taijuan Walker threw a bullpen session on Friday and likely will have at least one more before a decision is made about bringing Walker off the disabled list.

Walker, who is 4-3 with an ERA of 3.46, went on the disabled list on May 21 because of a blister on his right index finger.

He wore a bandage on the finger during a simulated game on Wednesday and in Friday’s bullpen session.

“We want to get him in there and start as soon as possible,” manager Torey Lovullo said before Friday’s game against the Brewers. “That’s the plan, but we aren’t going to put him in a situation where things are going to go backwards for him.”

The Diamondbacks have three days off in the week of June 12 through 19, which gives the team several options in deciding when to use Walker again.

“I think the bullpens right now are more about allowing things to heal while it’s covered,” Lovullo said, and “keeping his endurance, keeping his leg strength and keeping his overall body and core strength where it needs to be so he can step right into a start.”

A rehab start in the minor leagues might not be necessary, Lovullo said.

Sooner surprise

In 2011, Diamondbacks reliever Archie Bradley picked professional baseball over the opportunity to play football and baseball at Oklahoma, but that didn’t stop him from feeling like a Sooner.

And like any other Oklahoma fan, Bradley was surprised when football coach Bob Stoops announced his retirement this week.

“Since I can remember being an OU fan, Bob Stoops has been there,” Bradley said. “Like most fans, we don’t know what it’s going to be like without him. He set a tone, he set a standard that you want to have at Oklahoma. He may be the most famous guy in Oklahoma.”

Bradley played football and baseball at Broken Arrow (Okla.) High and was recruited by Stoops.

Even though Bradley didn’t play at Oklahoma, “I still act like I did,” he said, laughing. “I hope sometime in the near future I get to talk to him and tell him thank you. What an amazing career he had.”

A short departure

Lovullo confirmed that right-hander Zack Greinke is expected to make his regular start on Tuesday against the Tigers in Detroit.

Greinke was placed on paternity leave on Thursday. His wife, Emily, is expecting their second child.

Pollock update

Outfielder A.J. Pollock is increasing the intensity of rehabilitation from a groin injury suffered in May. Pollock increased his running distance on Friday, and the next step, Lovullo said, is a “straight-line progression with some slight turns.”

That is scheduled for Saturday.

Options at catcher

The Diamondbacks have three catchers on the roster, which is unusual, and Lovullo likes the flexibility it gives him.

Chris Iannetta and Jeff Mathis play the position full-time. Chris Herrmann can play catcher, first base, left field and more, according to the manager.

“It gives me a great comfort knowing we can maneuver and use them in different roles,” Lovullo said. “Maybe pinch-hitting or we can have them pinch-run and you’re not burning the other catcher on your roster.

Earlier this week, Herrmann was hit by a pitch and suffered a bruise on his right hand. Herrmann is available off the bench, Lovullo said, and will start at catcher on Sunday with Robbie Ray pitching.

Catching up with the Milwaukee Brewers

Brewers update: The Brewers rallied to tie their series finale with the Giants in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday but wound up losing in 10 innings, leaving them with a four-game split.

For the past few weeks, they’ve been bouncing between first and second in the NL Central, never falling back by more than a half-game, never leading by more than two. They still rank fourth in the National League in runs per game, but the offense has fallen off in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, the pitching has improved; in the past 14 games entering Thurday, the Brewers had a 2.95 ERA as a team. While 1B Eric Thames’ bat has cooled after a hot start, 3B Travis Shaw has had a productive few weeks, hitting .333/.398/.533 over his past 19 games. RF Domingo Santana has also been swinging the bat well, owning an OPS of .988 in his past 22 games.

Friday’s lineup

D-Backs enjoying this ride

Friday’s story on the Diamondbacks from Nick Piecoro depicts a team with an easy going confidence and positive attitude that many players have attributed to manager Torey Lovullo.

Among the nuggets contained in Nick’s story:

The players seem to have a genuine affection for Lovullo and his management style.

“He comes around and asks you, ‘How are your kids doing? How’s life going? How are things going?’” catcher Chris Iannetta said. “You get the sense that he genuinely cares. People can check boxes and be like, ‘Hey, how are you?’ And move on, and that’s it. But you get a sense of the people in your lives – friends, family, whoever it may be – that genuinely care how the person is doing regardless of the baseball player.”

Iannetta thought someone was messing with him when Iannetta saw he was batting second in Thursday’s game.

“I asked if that was a typo,” Iannetta said, smiling while he described a conversation with coach Jerry Narron, who shows players the next day’s lineup the night before. “Then I asked if we were trying.”

Infielder/outfielder Chris Owings might’ve stolen his latest walk-out song from David Peralta, when Owings changed his at-bat music to the Quad City DJ’s “C’mon N’ Ride It.” Owings said Peralta, who is nicknamed “The Freight Train,” had been talking about adopting the song but never made the change, so Owings co-opted it for himself.

“I was like, ‘All right, the next time I play right field, I’m going to make it my walk-out,’” Owings said. “(Peralta) didn’t know about, so I kind of looked at him when the song came on and he was over there smiling in the dugout. This is a fun team, a good clubhouse, so it’s fun to do stuff like that.”
