Summer is here. Our nemesis has arrived. But this year, there’s a different feeling in town.

The Diamondbacks are even hotter.

They are among the most surprising teams in Major League Baseball. They’ve won 31 of their first 50 games entering Saturday’s game in Milwaukee. They’re nearly unbeatable at Chase Field, and their 21 home victories is an astounding feat, considering last year’s team didn’t reach that number until Aug. 22.

They are threatening to do the impossible, turning a Valley summer into a celebration.

“I’m getting excited for them,” Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said. “I absolutely love Paul Goldschmidt and Patrick Corbin. You couldn’t have two better guys in our community. I hope they play my Twins in the World Series.”

To date, the Diamondbacks say they’ve seen no noticeable spike in television ratings. Their average home attendance of 22,648 still ranks third-worst in the National League. But when the team returns from its current road trip on June 6, their Ballpark Summer Pass promotion will begin, where all 4,000 passes sold out within a matter of days.

That might bring a new energy to the park. But will this team capture your heart and your attention? Will games become appointment viewing so Valley residents are well-versed at the water cooler? Will you walk into a sports bar and not have to ask someone to turn on the local team?

Will the 2017 Diamondbacks draw in a community and not just a crowd?

“Arizona is a very unique fan base,” said broadcaster Bob Brenly, who managed the Diamondbacks to a World Series title in 2001. “We have so many people from all over the country who brought their allegiances from their hometowns with them. All you have to do is go to a Cubs game. Even the White Sox had a pretty sizable fan base that showed up at the ballpark.

“It’s something the Diamondbacks will always have to battle. We’re a very transient community, with a lot of people from other places, and they root for their hometown teams. And then they root for the Diamondbacks.”

azcentral sports’ Jay Dieffenbach and Dan Bickley discuss the key for the Diamondbacks’ long-term success this season and weigh in on the LeBron vs. Jordan debate.

History proves that Valley franchises have an unfair burden of proof. Successful teams that come from nowhere don’t fill their stadiums until the playoffs. They don’t see a dramatic increase in ticket sales until the following season, and that’s been a huge problem from a sports town full of one-hit wonders.

Dennis Erickson won his first eight games as head football coach at Arizona State. Ryan McDonough’s Suns won 48 games in his first season as general manager. Kirk Gibson’s team went to the playoffs in his rookie season as manager in 2011. Disappointment soon followed for all three fan bases, confirming local skepticism over the ability of Valley teams to sustain success.

The Cardinals have been the anomaly. Since 2008, they’ve had four 10-win seasons, four playoff berths and one Super Bowl appearance. That’s why their home sellout streak is 114 and counting.

“They just have to take care of their business on the field and hope the fans notice,” Brenly said. “You hope they appreciate the effort and the exciting baseball we’re seeing on the field on almost a nightly basis. (But) it’s going to take some time.

“Eventually, there will be a strong Diamondbacks fan base. And I think we’re seeing more of that, with a lot of younger kids out at the ballpark this season. You’d like to hope that continues and we can build a fan base that shouts down the Dodgers and the Giants and the Cubs fans when they roll into Chase Field.”

Civic engagement is much harder for the Diamondbacks, cursed to play a summertime sport in the desert, forced to stage an outdoor game in a cavernous domed stadium.

During their magical playoff run in 2011, they were still trying to entice fans with special promotions, like $4 tickets and free admission for up to six children for every paid adult. In August, they averaged barely 17,000 fans for a series against Houston. The turnstiles didn’t get crazy until September, which seemed a little ungrateful, even for Valley standards.

Here’s hoping 2017 is a bit different.

“In my experience, strong attention turns to our team if we are competitive and school is out for the summer,” said team President and CEO Derrick Hall. “We have already seen a slight climb with higher weekday numbers compared to the start of the season, a sign that we should be seeing steady growth.”

BICKLEY: Diamondbacks hit a home run with ‘summer pass’ ticket deal

Meanwhile, Dan Majerle – former Suns star, restaurateur and current head coach at Grand Canyon University – is already sensing a groundswell of interest at his chain of sports bars.

“We’re seeing significantly more customers during pre- and post-game downtown on home games,” Majerle said. “We’ve also seen an increase in viewing for road games. The other locations (outside downtown Phoenix) have had the most interest in a long time for the Snakes.”

Will those fans make it to the stadium? Can the 2017 Diamondbacks sustain their success and make a playoff run, rallying the community around Sedona Red and not just the Big Red?

If nothing else, this team could make the coming months somewhat bearable, lifting civic morale out of our air-conditioned stupor. They might even give you reason to cheer and not curse the long, hot summer ahead.
