After turning in another strong outing, this time in a minor-league game on Wednesday afternoon, Diamondbacks right-hander Archie Bradley said he’d welcome the chance to start the season in the bullpen if there’s no room for him in the rotation.

“With the way I’m throwing the baseball right now, the way I feel, the way the ball is coming out, I’m comfortable in any role, in any capacity,” Bradley said. “Just put me on this team.”

Bradley gave up just one hit in five innings against San Francisco Giants minor leaguers. He did not walk a batter for the third consecutive outing.

“I’m getting ahead, and when I’m getting ahead, I’m putting guys away,” Bradley said. “I’m throwing all four pitches. I’m throwing change-ups, I’m throwing cutters, I’m throwing curveballs. I feel like my last couple of outings, I’ve thrown more change-ups and cutters than I have curveballs, which is a huge sign of improvement for me.”

With Zack Greinke, Taijuan Walker, Robbie Ray, Shelby Miller and Patrick Corbin seemingly in line to open the season in the rotation, the Diamondbacks appear to be at least considering the idea of shifting Bradley to relief.

If they do, Bradley would remain an option to start, at least early on, and if they get deeper into the season and Bradley is no longer stretched out, the club has other starting pitching options in the minors, including right-handers Braden Shipley, Matt Koch and Keyvius Sampson and lefty Anthony Banda, all of whom are likely to start for Triple-A Reno.

Miller sharp

Miller also threw well in a different minor-league game at the Giants’ complex, giving up two runs in 4 2/3 innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

With his velocity up to 97 mph, Miller said he was pleased with his ability to command his fastball to both sides of the plate.

“I was a little bit more efficient today,” he said. “I was working on throwing the ball inside a little more. I’ve been trying to get in on righties and lefties a little more. I got some soft ground balls off of that.”

Short hop

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt was out of the Team USA lineup for Wednesday night’s World Baseball Classic final. It was the fourth consecutive game he was out of the starting lineup; he didn’t play at all in the previous two games. Goldschmidt was just 1 for 13, meaning he had about half as many at-bats as the U.S. team’s everyday players.
