Gregor Blanco added to D-Backs roster

When Gregor Blanco strained his oblique late in spring training, the veteran outfielder figured he’d be out a week, perhaps two at the most. Six weeks later, Blanco finally is back with the Diamondbacks, who selected his contract from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

“I didn’t think it was going to be that long, but I had a couple of setbacks,” Blanco said. “My back started hurting a little bit because of the same injury. But right now, everything is good to go.”

Not only did the injury delay his season, it led the Diamondbacks to release him from the minor league contract they gave him in the offseason, only to sign him back to a new deal shortly after.

At the time, the club had to either add him to the major league roster or grant him his release. Prior to the injury Blanco had appeared to be a lock to make the roster. But the oblique complicated matters, and the club was no longer comfortable adding him immediately.

But the Diamondbacks still wanted him to stay in the organization. And while Blanco could have gone elsewhere, he said leaving didn’t feel right.

“You’ve already set your goals with these guys and talked to them about how the season was going to go and how to be teammates and take care of each other, play for each other and try to win a championship,” Blanco said. “It’s hard to see yourself out of it. You have to re-think in your mind. But I wasn’t ready for that. This is a great group of guys. I’m just happy that I’m with them.”

Blanco figures to play a similar role as outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker, who was optioned to Reno on Thursday morning to make room for right-hander Braden Shipley to start that day’s series finale against the Nationals.

Shipley, though, was sent back to Reno on Friday to make room for Blanco. Left-hander Steve Hathaway was transferred to the 60-day disabled list, clearing space for Blanco on the 40-man roster.

Lineup

1. A.J. Pollock CF

2. David Peralta RF

3. Paul Goldschmidt 1B

4. Jake Lamb 3B

5. Yasmany Tomas LF

6. Brandon Drury 2B

7. Chris Owings SS

8. Jeff Mathis C

9. Zack Greinke P

Note: David Peralta and Brandon Drury return to the lineup after missing Thursday’s loss to the Nationals with illness. Drury left Wednesday’s game in the seventh inning after feeling weak and dizzy. Peralta didn’t play Tuesday or Wednesday and didn’t start Thursday, but did pinch-hit for Randall Delgado in the eighth inning, grounding out to third.

Pregame notes

Prior to Friday’s game, the Diamondbacks recalled Gregor Blanco from Triple-A Reno and optioned right-hander Braden Shipley to Reno.

Zack Greinke gave up three runs – each run coming on a solo home run – in six-plus innings against the Rockies last week at Chase Field. SS Trevor Story, 1B Mark Reynolds and PH Alexi Amarista homered off him.

Greinke has eight walks and 40 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings. That’s an improvement in both categories compared to his averages per nine innings last season.

PREGAME READING: D-Backs’ bats continue to slumber on the road

Greinke has a 4.26 ERA in 44 1/3 innings in his career at Coors Field.

German Marquez was impressive on Sunday against the Diamondbacks, tossing six scoreless innings, with one walk and eight strikeouts, in a game the Rockies lost 2-0 in extra innings at Chase Field.

Marquez was roughed up in his first start, allowing eight runs in four innings.

He had a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings at Triple-A Albuquerque before joining the rotation.

Rockies update

The Rockies took two of three from the Diamondbacks at Chase Field over the weekend, then split the first two games of a three-game series against the Padres at Petco Park. They made a series of moves on Wednesday, bringing LHP Mike Dunn back from the disabled list and optioning RHP Carlos Estevez, and selecting the contract of C Ryan Hanigan to replace C Tony Wolters, who was placed on the seven-day concussion list. The Rockies are averaging 4.7 runs per game, ninth in the National League, and own a 4.52 ERA, which ranks fifth-to-last. As usual, they’re a far better offensive team at Coors Field, where they’re averaging 5.6 runs per game through 13 games, though they’re only 7-6 at home. IF/OF Ian Desmond had a two-homer game on Wednesday, and is 5 for 14 since coming off the DL.
