Coyotes General Manager John Chayka expected to be busy at the NHL draft Friday in Chicago, and he started the day off with a trade – landing defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson from the Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Connor Murphy and center Laurent Dauphin before acquiring goalie Antti Raanta and center Derek Stepan in exchange for defenseman Anthony DeAngelo and the seventh overall pick at this year’s draft.

No salary was retained in the trade.

Hjalmarsson is a three-time Stanley Cup champion who, at the age of 30, has developed into a steady, top-four option on the back end. In 73 games last season, he had five goals and 18 points for the Blackhawks. He has two seasons remaining on a five-year, $20.5 million contract.

“We are very pleased to acquire Niklas,” Chayka said in a statement released by the team. “He’s an elite player and one of the NHL’s top defenseman. He’s a warrior who played a key role in Chicago’s last three Stanley Cup wins. We are thrilled to have him join our team.”

A left shot, Hjalmarsson has played both sides of defense but was added to fill out the top pairing next to lefty Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The two are familiar with each other, most recently suiting up for Sweden at the World Cup of Hockey.

Murphy appeared to be part of the Coyotes’ young core as he signed a six-year, $23.1 million contract just last summer. He had a subpar year, though, last season with two goals and 17 points in 77 games and didn’t seem to be the long-term solution as he played on a lower pairing for much of the season with Luke Schenn eventually working alongside Ekman-Larsson.

As for Dauphin, he had been a depth option at center for the Coyotes who played 24 games last season in the NHL. He could have been in line for more opportunity next season if the Coyotes didn’t add to the position this summer.

Check back for updates.
