A brush fire closed Interstate 17 southbound lanes south of Cordes Junction Monday evening.

The fire, named the Cordes Fire, began before 5 p.m. and was estimated to have burned 500 acres by 8 p.m. Monday, according to the Arizona Bureau of Land Management.

The American Red Cross opened an evacuation center at the Mayer High School for people and pets escaping the fire.

Aircraft dropped fire retardant to slow the fire. Forward progress of the fire was stopped around 9 p.m., according to the bureau.

Traffic on I-17 was backed up about 15 miles, from Arcosanti to just north of Black Canyon City as of 9:15 p.m.

By 9:30 p.m., I-17 reopened at S.R. 69.
