Keep a coat and an umbrella close by as cooler weather — and possibly rain — are headed to central Arizona later this week, including the Phoenix area, the National Weather Service said.
In addition, higher elevations north of the Valley could see snow, as a weather system moves into the state later this week, officials said.
“A cold front will move through the region on Thursday bringing good chances for light rainfall across central and eastern Arizona,” according to a weather service forecast.
“A cooler and continued active weather pattern is likely this weekend and into early next week as temperatures fall to around 10 degrees below seasonal normals,” the forecast said.
A 40 percent chance of showers and breeziness are forecast for Thursday evening. High temperatures reach the low to mid-60s Friday and Saturday, while early morning lows will dip into the 40s in most areas.
Rain chances drop to 10 percent for Friday but increase to 20 percent by Saturday night.
As with most winter weather systems, higher-terrain areas will see more widespread shower activity and higher rainfall totals, the weather service reported.
Rainfall amounts of up to a tenth of an inch are likely across the south-central Arizona deserts with up to a third of an inch across the higher terrain.
The National Weather Service office in Flagstaff issued a projected snowfall forecast for northern Arizona showing 3 to 4 inches expected in Flagstaff and Williams Thursday and Friday, up to 2 inches in Heber and Show Low, and up to 3 inches at Grand Canyon Village.
Snow is expected to impact stretches of Interstates 17 and 40 near Flagstaff and Williams, the agency said.
Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s in Flagstaff by the end of this week, and low to mid-40s in Prescott and Payson.
In the meantime, dry conditions, mostly sunny skies and above-normal temperatures in the mid-70s will continue through midweek across Phoenix and the Southwest, until the front moves in Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
