Chandler figured to make a run at the 6A boys basketball championship next season. But now it will have to do it without a major part of its team.

Isaiah Broady, a 6-foot-8 swingman who can score from inside and outside, has transferred to AZ Compass Prep, which has a national high school team that isn’t part of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Broady won’t have far to go. AZ Compass Prep and Chandler High School are only two miles apart.

AZ Compass Prep tweeted about Broady’s arrival on Monday, calling him “skilled & lengthy, jumps out the gym & stretches the D with his high-level shooting ability. Going to make a huge impact on this team.”

Broady won’t have to miss any games because AZ Compass isn’t part of the AIA.

“He brings size, athleticism and shooting ability,” said Peter Kaffey, AZ Compass Prep’s program director. “He can shoot it from anywhere on the floor. Super athletic. You take those two things together, you have a a potential high major player.”

Grand Canyon has offered Broady a scholarship.

Broady is one of the state’s most versatile players. His length and ability to take his game outside causes matchup problems for teams. He is also a very good on-ball defender who forces turnovers.

Chandler would have revolved around the Big Three of Broady, point guard Carson Kelly and center Nicholas Riley, who led the Wolves to the 6A state semifinals last year.

Broady averaged 10.5 points and 4.3 rebounds last season. Kelly averaged 19.3 points and five assists, and Riley 14.4 points and 10.6 rebounds. All three are now seniors.
