Most NFL teams began their offseason training programs this week, so there were the obligatory quotes from players about how excited they were to return to work.

Not all of them are thrilled, however. Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald admitted as much in an interview with azcentralsports.com on Tuesday morning

“I’m just excited for the season,” Fitzgerald said when asked about the beginning of voluntary workouts. “It’s going to be a great bounce-back year for us. This (workouts) is the thing you have to do to get ready for the season. I understand that. I’m a professional.”

Fitzgerald made several local media appearances this week to promote his celebrity softball game on Saturday to benefit his foundation. Purchase tickets at saltriverfields.com.

azcentral sports’ Kent Somers and the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald discuss Fitzgerald’s charity softball tournament on Saturday.

Fitzgerald is entering his 14th, and possibly last, season. Part of the reason he returned for 2017 is he believes the Cardinals can contend for a championship.

The Cardinals went 7-8-1 a year ago, their first losing record in four seasons under coach Bruce Arians.

“Coach always harps on respecting the process,” Fitzgerald said, “and guys have to understand his formula, what he’s done has won championships, the offense he’s had has produced thousands and thousands of yards and success.

“Not everybody in the league has our personnel, but personnel only takes you so far, as we saw last year.”

The Cardinals have the 13th overall pick in the draft later this month. It’s possible they could draft a quarterback who ideally wouldn’t play as a rookie, but would learn behind Carson Palmer.

A player at another position, however, could contribute this season, which would be important to those players at the end of their careers, like Fitzgerald. But he is not getting involved in the draft process.

“Realistically, we’re not naïve, we have some players who are a little older,” Fitzgerald said. “We don’t know how much longer Carson’s going to play. We don’t know how much longer I’m going to play. You have to draft for your future.

“We want to win right now, that’s what our goal is. But we need to probably get a quarterback, moving forward, getting some other players in key positions who are young and play for a long time. Those types of decision on the future are Steve Keim’s and Coach Arians’.”
