The Cardinals have signed veteran kicker Mike Nugent to their practice squad, bringing the free agent back to the franchise 11 years after his first stint in Arizona.

Nugent, 38, has scored 1,151 points in his 15-year career, the 44th-most in NFL history. A second-round pick out of Ohio State by the Jets in 2005, Nugent has converted 258 of 319 field-goal attempts (80.9 percent) and 378 out of 393 extra-point attempts. In five career playoff games, he is 7 of 8 on field-goal attempts and made all five extra-point tries.

In 2009, Nugent was signed by the Cardinals after an injury to Neil Rackers and he made both of his field-goal attempts and all eight extra points in two games.

Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said this week that the team remains “very comfortable” with Zane Gonzalez as its primary kicker. Gonzalez made a career-long 56-yard field goal last Sunday at the 49ers, but he also missed from 49 and 52 yards.

The Cardinals presently have two available spots on the 16-man practice squad.
