Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said on Monday that the team is still working through safety Chris Banjo’s hamstring injury. He is day to day right now with the injury incurred during Sunday’s 26-23 loss to the Lions. With that, Kingsbury said “there has been discussion” about having rookie Isaiah Simmons play safety.
“With those bodies being down, we may have to look into that,” he said.
Kingsbury liked how second-year safety Deionte Thompson stepped in for Banjo, particularly with limited game action leading up to Sunday.
Safety Jalen Thompson is on injured reserve, and Budda Baker will miss some time as he recovers from thumb surgery. Kingsbury did not set an exact time table for his return.
“We’ll see how the procedure goes, and kind of take it from there,” Kingsbury said. “Hopefully sooner rather than later on that.”
Outside of injury issues at safety, Kingsbury acknowledged that quarterback Kyler Murray’s three interceptions came in part from an aggressive style of play.
“He’s definitely pushing the envelope. He’s trying to make a lot of plays and create, and you’ve got to walk that fine line,” Kingsbury said. “He’s going to be aggressive, and that’s what we want. … I think as the season goes on that that’ll be less of an issue.”
