The Cardinals returned to the practice fields for the third consecutive week of organized team activities Tuesday.

Here were some of the highlight from coach Bruce Arians’ news conference with reporters:

NFL TOP 100: Larry Fitzgerald second Cardinal to make list

Quarterback Carson Palmer is participating more than anticipated.

Arians had said Palmer doesn’t need the extra reps this early and that, at age 37, it’s not worth putting more miles on the veteran’s arm this early. Palmer, however, was throwing in drills last week, according to the coach, and he participated in full on-field workouts on Tuesday and will do so again on Wednesday.

“We’ll see how he feels two days in a row,” Arians said. “Whether he goes Thursday or Friday, we’ll see. But he looked really sharp,”

And apparently, Palmer was champing at the bit to get in some action.

“Yeah, he was like a kid in a candy store,” Arians said.

Could a veteran running back be added to the roster?

Arians said, yes, there’s actually a chance that could happen. The Cardinals did show some interest in then-free agent LeGarrette Blount, who has since signed with the Eagles. But Arians wouldn’t rule out bringing in an experienced back to help behind David Johnson.

Arians said he likes the running backs he has – Johnson, Kerwynn Williams, Elijhaa Penny, Andre Ellington, who is also getting looks at wide receiver, and rookie T.J. Logan.

“They’re all kind of proven other than Elijhaa. We know what we have in Kerwynn. We know what we have in Andre and his flexibility is very good for him. Elijhaa is kind of the dark horse and T.J., he’s learning but we know he can return kicks. I like what I saw out of Elijhaa all of last year (on the practice squad).

Asked if there is a need for a veteran in the room since the Cardinals did not bring back Chris Johnson, Arians said: “We’ll see. I don’t see a glaring need for one right now, but there’s always a possibility.”

Evan Boehm will begin training camp as the starting right guard.

This is news because when the team drafted Dorian Johnson out of Pittsburgh with a fourth-round pick, it was thought Johnson would get every chance to compete with the second-year Boehm for the job. Not so, says Arians.

“Evan is right where he left off,” the coach said. “He’s a lot stronger. He had a great offseason in the weight room. He’s battling (defensive tackle Robert) Nkemdiche pretty good every day. Dorian is learning.”

So the starting job isn’t wide open?

“No. It’s Evan’s job to lose,” Arians said.
