Over the past four years, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians often said Andre Ellington had the route-running and catching abilities to make the switch from running back to wide receiver.

This offseason, Ellington’s fifth in the NFL, the Cardinals are going to find out if that’s true.

Ellington has shifted to receiver, and he’s been busy this spring trying to learn each receiving position. It’s too early to see just how difficult the transition will be.

“It’s the terminology, that’s the hardest part,” Ellington said, “and weaving through traffic, so to speak, without the ball. At running back, you’re doing that with the ball. At receiver you’re doing that trying to get open.”

Ellington, a sixth-round pick out of Clemson in 2013, spent time at every tier of the running backs depth chart in his first four seasons. He was a third-down and specialty back in 2013, the starter in 2014, back to a backup in 2015 and then barely used a year ago.

In his first two seasons, Ellington averaged nearly 1,000 yards from scrimmage. Last season, he gained just 181 yards from scrimmage, despite playing in all 16 games.

David Johnson’s ascension into the upper echelon of NFL backs had something to do with Ellington’s dwindling statistics, but so did Ellington’s lack of production in the few times he touched the ball.

In an effort to get a playmaker off the sideline and into the game, Arians and his coaches moved Ellington to part-time receiver toward the end of last year. This spring, Ellington’s a full-time receiver, provided he proves himself there and there isn’t a need for him at running back.

“It’s just a matter of cracking the lineup,” Arians said. “We can always slide him back to running back. He’s an explosive player that needs to get better at that. He knows how to run the ball, it’s just a matter of will he run it tough or not.”

Ellington likely isn’t going to become one of the team’s top three receivers, not as long as Larry Fitzgerald, John Brown and J.J. Nelson are healthy. But Arians, and every other offensive coach, loves to create mismatches, and Ellington could be difficult to cover for some defensive backs.

Like Johnson, Ellington has lined up at receiver many times in his career, but doing so full-time and learning every receiver position is a challenge.

“Just a different vantage point, as far as the defense is concerned,” quarterback Carson Palmer said. “Seeing ‘hots’ and coverages is a lot different. He’s not used to seeing coverages and adjusting off of coverage.

“That’s the difference between being in the backfield and standing up in a two-point stance in a receiver’s spot.”

Earning playing time won’t be easy for Ellington. In addition to the top trio of receivers, the Cardinals have Jaron Brown, who impressed last year before suffering a knee injury, third-round pick Chad Williams, Brittan Golden, Jeremy Ross and Aaron Dobson.

Ellington knew what he was walking into this spring when he signed a one-year deal that included only $80,000 guaranteed.

“It’s pretty deep,” Ellington said of the receiver positions. “But, hey, that’s what makes it fun. To compete and learn from guys’ skill sets and trying to put it in yours.”
