Brophy Prep outlasted San Luis on Friday night in a thrilling shootout to claim the 6A boys soccer state championship for the third straight year.
Brophy edged San Luis on penalty kicks for the title, 3-2.
The teams each scored one goal in regulation.
Sophomore Sidewinder defender Erick Quirarte got things started with the first goal for San Luis early in the first first half.
Charlie Cobb, the 6A points leader, scored the equalizer late in the second half for the Broncos.
In last year’s state championship, Brophy found itself down one as well. Cobb said coach Paul Allen gave the same speech as last year at the half.
“He told us to calm down, catch our nerves, play our game,” the senior forward said. “We thought back to all the pain we felt, and that’s what carried us through.”
While the Broncos won the match outscoring the Sidewinders on penalty kicks, the San Luis defense thwarted a winner in both regulation and in the 30 minutes of overtime.
Sidewinder coach Jesus Rojas credited midfielder Jesus Anguiano for keeping the Brophy offense and Cobb at bay for most of the match.
“He just kept number 10 off for the whole game; he came out a couple of minutes and number 10 scored on us,” Rojas said.
Both goalkeepers handled themselves under pressure. Sidewinder keeper Martin Sanchez, ranked seventh in 6A goal against average, saved multiple attacks mostly from Cobb until the forward ultimately found the back of the net.
Senior Brophy goalkeeper Bryan Figueroa staved top San Luis striker Roberto Uribe’s penalty kick and two others to seal the victory.
Allen said once it went to shootouts, he knew they’d be alright because of Figueroa’s skillset.
“He is a fantastic young human being always smiling, always bright,” Allen said. “He’s not the captain, but he certainly is the voice of the team.”
Cobb shared a similar sentiment knowing that Figueroa would hold it down during the pressure moment.
“As soon as we all lined up for the penalty kicks, we all knew we were gonna win,” Cobb said. “He’s been a brick wall back there. Mr. consistent, and it showed tonight. He won us the game.”
San Luis still has never tasted state championship victory. The team’s undefeated season didn’t end the way Rojas wanted, but he sees that mentality carrying over into next year’s team.
Meanwhile, Brophy added another trophy to their dynastic soccer program making it 10 total. Allen said he tells his players this is more than a team, it’s a brotherhood.
“Everyone’s involved, everyone cares,” Allen said. “Reality is I’m only as good as my players, and my players tonight were fantastic.”
