Border Patrol officers were involved in a shooting at an immigration checkpoint north of Tombstone on Wednesday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The incident happened when a man driving north on State Route 80 drove into the barriers an immigration checkpoint at the intersection of SR 80 and SR 82 at about 3:45 p.m., officials said.

The man began firing a gun at officers, officials said, prompting them to return fire.

The man was shot and given immediate medical attention, officials said. 

He was flown to a Tucson-area hospital for further medical treatment. His condition was not available late Wednesday.

The investigation, which involves several agencies, was ongoing, officials said.
