Police officers and firefighters discovered a dead body in the trunk of a burning car abandoned after a police chase Thursday morning, authorities said.

Officers were called to Cave Creek Road and Union Hills Drive about 3:30 a.m. for a report of a person pointing a gun at someone.

Officers found a vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, according to Sgt. Vince Lewis, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Officers again found the car around 23rd Street and Grovers Avenue. The car had caught fire and the occupants were gone, Lewis said.

Phoenix firefighters helped extinguish the fire and found a dead body in the trunk, Lewis said.

The identity of the victim was not immediately known.

An investigation was continuing.
