After a multiday search and rescue operation, a body found in the Grand Canyon on Wednesday is believed to be a missing Kentucky man, according to the National Park Service.

John Pennington, 40 of Walton, Kentucky, was last known to be near Yaki Point, Park Service officials said in a news release. It was believed he entered the Grand Canyon on or around Feb. 23 and abandoned his personal vehicle.

According to a press release posted on Facebook, National Park Service personnel found a body and a motorcycle approximately 465 feet below the South Kaibab Trailhead.

The body was taken to the canyon rim by helicopter and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“Based on evidence found with the body, the individual is believed to be missing person John Pennington,” the release said.

The investigation is ongoing.
