After turning around Coolidge in his second season as head coach, Bill Godsil is leaving to lead Mesa Dobson’s football program.

Godsil was tied up in meetings at Dobson all day Monday and could not comment immediately.

Coolidge went 2-8 in his first season in 2017, before going 7-4 and losing to Chandler Valley Christian in the first round of the 3A playoffs last season.

Godsil faces another rebuilding job.

Dobson went 2-8 last season under Pete Wahlheim, who left after two seasons to return to Chandler Seton Catholic to be head coach.

Dobson has not had a winning season since 2007, when it went 7-5 under Tom DeMassa.

The Mustangs, whose only state championship came in 1987, had two 5-5 seasons during George De La Torre’s tenure from 2012-16.

Godsil leaves a Coolidge team that is loaded and could go deeper in the 3A state playoffs. Quarterback Valentine Rodriguez passed for 1,572 yards and 22 touchdowns with five interceptions as a junior. He also ran for 548 yards and eight TDs.

Coolidge’s five top rushers last season were underclassmen. Receiver/defensive back Greg Reece had four interceptions on defense and caught 37 passes on offense last season as a junior.
