A 25-year-old man died after he slipped and fell off a cliff Sunday morning at Glen Canyon Dam Overlook, according to Coconino County and Glen Canyon officials.
While authorities were recovering the man’s body, they also found human remains belonging to another person.
Witnesses reported that a man, later identified as 25-year-old Orlando Serrano-Arzola, was standing at the top of the rim and taking pictures of the Colorado River below when he fell from the rim around 9 a.m. on Sunday, according to a joint statement from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on Tuesday.
Serrano-Arzola fell about 100 feet and then slid down another 150, the statement continued. He suffered severe trauma. A sheriff’s deputy rappelled to him around 9:30 a.m. and confirmed that he was showing no signs of life.
The National Park Service, Page Police Department and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation assisted the Sheriff’s Office in recovering Serrano-Arzola’s body. During the recovery operation, they also found human bones at the base of the outlook.
The Sheriff’s Office and National Park Service were conducting an investigation into the remains. No other information was available as of Tuesday afternoon.
Serrano-Arzola was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff for an autopsy. The death was also under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and National Park Service.
