When Bobby Hurley played against Chris Mullin in the NBA, the future Arizona State coach got the better of the future St. John’s coach on one occasion.

Hurley outscored Mullin with 17 points off the bench for the Sacramento Kings. Mullin had 12 points for the Golden State Warriors also off the bench in the January 1996 game.

They would meet just three more times with Mullin outscoring Hurley in each subsequent game.

Of course, Mullin went on to play 16 NBA seasons and was eventually inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.

Hurley played just five seasons in the league.

Now, when it comes to coaching experience, Hurley also has Mullin beat.

Hurley coached at Buffalo, which will face the winner of ASU-St. John’s. Hurley coached at Buffalo from 2013-15 before taking the job at Arizona State.

Mullin’s first coaching job has actually come at St. John’s, where he took over in 2015.

In six seasons as a head coach Hurley has a 114-77 record, while Mullin is 59-72 in four seasons as a head coach.

ASU and St. John’s will play in the NCAA First Four Wednesday at 6:10 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio. The winner of that game will advance to play Buffalo in the NCAA Tournament Friday in Tulsa, Okla.
