Arizona State senior wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk annnounced Sunday that he will not play in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 because of his prospects in the NFL draft.
Aiyuk made All Pac-12 first team as a wide receiver and return specialist in his second season at ASU. He ranks among the top 10 nationally in receiving yards, all purpose yards and top 20 in combined kick returns.
In a social media post Sunday, Aiyuk was effusive in praising ASU for developing him coming out of Sierra College. “My gratitude for ASU has no end,” he wrote. “ASU has enabled me to puruse a lifelong dream of playing in the NFL.”
ESPN’s Todd McShay projects Aiyuk, 6-1, 206, as a NFL first-round draft pick, currently at No. 23 in his top 32.
Former ASU wide receiver N’Keal Harry left college a year early to enter the 2019 NFL draft and was a first-round pick by New England.
ASU will be without running back Eno Benjamin, leaving early for the NFL draft, and Aiyuk in the Sun Bowl against Florida State. Benjamin also made All Pac-12 first team off his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season.
Florida State will be without running back Cam Akers, also leaving for the NFL, in the Sun Bowl.
ASU (7-5) begins bowl practice Monday.
