The highest number of known positive COVID-19 cases among students at any of Arizona’s largest universities as of Tuesday was 60, with numbers dropping consistently each week.

The University of Arizona was only managing 24and said “with the full support of our public health advisors,” the university plans to move to stage three of four of its reopening process during the week of March 29.

Stage three means courses of up to 100 students may begin offering in-person instruction. However, the indoor event limit remains at 25 and the outdoor event limit remains at 50.

Stage four is 100% in-person instruction with no limits to either indoor or outdoor events.

Here are the latest updates from Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and Grand Canyon University.

UA: Known positive cases in past 10 days drop below 25

The University of Arizona reported 24 new positive COVID-19 cases — eight on-campus students, 13 off campus, and three employees — during the period from March 8 to March 16.

A total of 12,921 tests were administered during that time frame, resulting in a 0.2% positivity rate.

In the prior 10-day stretch, the university reported 31 positive test results and a 0.2% positivity rate.

During the period between Aug. 4 and March 15, the university had a total of 4,153 positive cases out of 216,664 tests, a positivity rate of 1.9%.

The university’s seven-day average of new positive test results peaked in September at 181. As of Monday, that number was down to three.

ASU: Only 6 known active cases among staff

Arizona State University reported on Monday 60 known positive COVID-19 cases currently considered active among its 74,500 students, a decrease from the 62 it reported in its March 8 update.

Of those 60 students, 50 were off campus, while 10 were in isolation on the university’s Tempe campus.

Cases among faculty and staff also decreased, from eight in its report a week ago to six as of Monday.

Since Jan. 1, ASU has collected more than 69,161 COVID-19 test results. About 86% of students living on campus and 23% of students living off campus have been tested since Jan. 1, the university reported.

With 1,897 cases out of 69,161 tests, ASU has a positivity rate of roughly 2.7% so far this semester.

A rate of 5% or less is considered a benchmark that the spread of the virus is under control.

GCU: Zero known cases among staff for second week in a row

As of March 14, GCU said there were five positive COVID-19 cases connected to its community. All five are students, with zero known cases among staff.

Last week, that number was six, which included six students and zero employees.

Since Jan. 1, there have been 532 positive cases, of which 458 are students and 74 are employees.

It was not possible to determine a positivity rate for GCU as the university does not release the number of tests performed.

NAU: Managing fewer than 30 cases

NAU says it is managing 25 active cases among students on and off campus. It does not report cases among staff.

In addition, the university reports that its testing at the University Union Fieldhouse, which includes an unknown number of people not involved with NAU, is seeing a positivity rate below 5% for the past eightweeks.

As of Tuesday, the university said its testing facility had administered approximately 62,118 tests since September and that it planned to test 13% to 14% of its Flagstaff Mountain Campus students, faculty and staff each week.
