Five players scored for Arizona State hockey Friday in a 5-0 season-ending win at Ohio State.

James Sanchez, Willie Knierim (short-handed), Chris Grando (power play), Matthew Kopperud and Benji Eckerle had goals, the first three in the opening period.

Freshman goalie Cole Brady made 41 saves for his first college shutout.

ASU split its final series after losing 8-3 Thursday. The Sun Devils were 2-1-1 vs. Ohio State (7-18-1) for the season.

“He was just solid,” ASU coach Greg Powers said. “They obviously had most of their shots on power plays and we controlled the puck really well, limited second chance opportunities. We got some bounces tonight in front of them. At the end of the day, he just competed, and he really ended the season on a really positive note. I think it shows a lot of how mentally tough he is and can be bouncing back like you did after that game last night.”

ASU played an all-road season (aside from two exhibition games) due to the coronavirus pandemic with all of its games against Big Ten competition.

“This is this is a chapter in our story that we’re going to be able to look back on and be proud of and be able to tell how we’re one of the only collegiate teams probably in Division I sports, especially with the nature of this way this happened, that didn’t have any (COVID-19) cancellations on their own accord.”

The only games ASU did not play were against Penn State on Feb. 20-21 due to COVID-19 issues for the Nittany Lions.
