Arizona State University saw 134 new COVID-19 cases — 132 students and 2 faculty or staff members — in the past week, according to numbers the university released Monday night.
In all, 211 students and four faculty or staff were considered currently positive for COVID-19 as of Monday, ASU said.
The number of people considered positive for COVID-19 at one point in time has declined throughout the month, down from 807 students and 18 faculty and staff known to be positive as of Sept. 6, according to ASU.
Of those students, 148 were off-campus in metro Phoenix, 60 were in isolation on the Tempe campus and the rest were in isolation among the other three campuses.
Four fraternity and sorority chapters were on interim suspension Monday as ASU investigated them for possible COVID-19 violations, an ASU spokesperson said. The chapters were not allowed to participate in social events during the investigation.
ASU requires random testing of a statistically significant sample of its community each week, and last week tested 530 on-campus students, 1,409 off-campus students and 551 employees as part of that. The random testing last week discovered 24 positive COVID-19 cases among students and none among employees.
A total of 1,802 students and 33 faculty and staff have had COVID-19 since Aug. 1, according to the university.
With 1,835 confirmed cases out of 68,542 tests administered, ASU has had a 2.7% positivity rate since Aug. 1. A positivity rate of 5% is considered a good benchmark that the spread is under control.
The number of people in the ASU community who had COVID-19 and were no longer considered positive, including people who were positive before Aug. 1, was 1,818 students and 152 faculty and staff as of Monday.
Meanwhile, the University of Arizona reported 274 new known COVID-19 cases in the past week, according to data on its website.
UA does not report the number of cases currently considered positive, but it reported its seven-day average number of positive test results a day declined to 50 on Monday from a peak of 181 on Sept. 16.
A total of 2,304 people at UA have had COVID-19 since Aug. 4, according to the university.
With 2,304 confirmed cases out of 37,548 tests administered, UA has had a 6.1% positivity rate since Aug. 4.
