Arizona soccer made a goal off a first-half corner kick stand up for a 1-0 win over Arizona State on Friday night in Tucson.

No. 16 ASU (6-1-2) suffered its first loss in the non-conference game. Arizona improved to 6-3.

The rivals will play again in a Pac-12 match on April 16 at Sun Devil Stadium.

Ava McCray scored the only goal in the 33rd minute on a header off a corner kick.

UA led 17-8 in shots, 6-5 in shots on goal and 11-2 in corner kicks.

The Wildcats now have won five straight over ASU going back to 2016, all by one goal.

Douglas scores in overtime in ASU soccer win over Oregon State

Pac-12 goals and scoring leader Nicole Douglas only got off one shot Sunday at Oregon State but put it into the net for a 1-0 Arizona State soccer win.

Attacking off a long pass from Jazmine Wilkinson, the junior forward made a touch cut between two defenders then scored from the top of the box in the 96th minute.

Douglas now has eight goals (three game winners) in eight games and 18 points. She is up to 28 career goals, tied for fifth in school history with Karin Volpe (2007-10).

No. 24 ASU remained unbeaten at 6-0-2, 2-0-2 Pac-12. The Sun Devils went into overtime for a third consecutive game, tying the previous two including Friday at Oregon. The Sun Devils are off to their best start since 2010 (6-0-1).

Oregon State fell to 2-6, 0-5 despite a 15-6 edge in shots (6-2 shots on goal) and 11-1 in corner kicks.

ASU goalie Giulia Cascapera made six saves to secure her fourth shutout.

“Our defense and Giulia withstood all of that pressure and did a fantastic job of keeping us in the game,” ASU coach Graham Winkworth said.

“We did a better job competing in the second half in our challenges and then when we won those challenges we maintained possession for long periods and created a couple of very good opportunities for ourselves. Eva (Van Deursen) went close in the dying seconds of regulation and then Dougie did her thing in overtime. It was a great first touch and a great finish with her weak foot.”

ASU plays at Arizona (5-3, 1-3) in a non-conference game Friday. The Pac-12 rivalry game is April 16 at Sun Devil Stadium.

No. 24 ASU soccer remains unbeaten on Douglas penalty kick goal

Nicole Douglas scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute Friday night as No. 24 Arizona State soccer remained unbeaten with a 1-1 tie at Oregon.

Douglas now has seven goals and leads the Pac-12 with 16 points.

Oregon (2-3-2, 1-2-1 Pac-12) scored late in the first half for a lead that stood up until Douglas was fouled inside the box and converted on her penalty kick.

“I think we defended really well,” ASU coach Graham Winkworth said. “Their biggest chances were off set pieces, and I think we defended them well and we defended open play well. We played a couple of different ways to what we have been doing to try and rest some of the legs in a two-game weekend, and I thought the players responded well.

“In the first half although we gave up a lot of possession to Oregon, we were the team with the three best chances, so I’m really happy with their efforts.”

ASU improved to 5-0-2, 1-0-2 with its second consecutive double overtime tie.

The Sun Devils led 11-10 in shots and 6-3 in shots on goal. Oregon had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

ASU is at Oregon State on Sunday.
