It may be too hot to enjoy the great outdoors in Arizona right now, but it’s the perfect time to figure out what outdoor activities you’re interested in by visiting the – indoor – Arizona Get Outdoors Expo at WestWorld of Scottsdale this July 15-16.

More than 60 exhibitors representing a variety of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, rock climbing, biking, running and yoga will be inside a 300,000-square-foot air-conditioned space this weekend.

“This event is geared toward families,” Kayla Laut, event producer, says. “It’s all about a new generation getting excited about getting outdoors and exploring what Arizona has to offer.”

New to this year’s event is The Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show featuring world champion lumberjacks doing ax throwing, log rolling and other exciting feats. The lumberjack show is 30 minutes, and they will be performing three times each day.

Those interested in archery will have two hands-on archery activities to choose from. New to this year’s event is archery tag, which uses arrows with soft points that look like large marshmallows.

Also new this year is the corn hole tournament put on by KB Kornhole Games. The tournament will run both days with advanced and social leagues. Participants must pre-register online to compete.

The catch and release pond is a great way for kids to get their first experience at fishing.
Arizona Game and Fish Department will be at the event with a variety of wildlife. In past years, they have brought owls, vultures, hawks, bobcats, prairie dogs and desert tortoises.

The folks from the Arizona Pure Water Brew Challenge will also be at the event with their advanced water purification system in a mobile truck. They will be performing demonstrations on how they can treat recycled community wastewater. They will also be giving away T-shirts and beer mugs.

“Our goal is to get out there and talk to the public and educate them about water,” says Channah Rock, University of Arizona cooperative extension water quality specialist. “We have the technology to treat wastewater to create pure water that is safe. It’s not a scary thing.”

To demonstrate how safe purified wastewater is, they have created the Arizona Pure Water Brew Challenge in which they will supply brewers across the state of Arizona with their purified wastewater to use to create beer. So far, 32 brewers have entered the challenge. Their beer will be judged in September.

The educational seminars and demonstrations also include Arizona Game and Fish Department talking about a variety of desert critters, Trout Unlimited doing a demonstration on the basics of fly fishing and the Scottsdale Police Department will be on-site with their canines showing a canine demonstration.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase from M Culinary Concepts. There will also be alcohol available for sale.
