Delgado lands on DL with elbow inflammation

The Diamondbacks placed right-hander Randall Delgado on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with right elbow inflammation, a potentially significant blow for a team that has leaned heavily on Delgado throughout the season for his versatility.

Taking his place on the roster is right-hander J.J. Hoover, who was reinstated from the DL after missing about three weeks with a shoulder issue.

Delgado’s situation was not announced until after manager Torey Lovullo had already conducted his pregame session with reporters. Delgado was seen in street clothes and appeared to be preparing to leave SunTrust Park, perhaps to return to Phoenix to undergo tests.

But, clearly, an issue with any pitcher’s elbow is a troubling development. For most of the season’s first 3 1/2 months, Degaldo had been a key piece to the club’s pitching puzzle. He began the year in the bullpen then shifted to the rotation before returning to a relief role, making another spot start in between.

Delgado gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning on Saturday against the Braves.

This marks just the second time in Delgado’s career he has been placed on the disabled list, and the first time due to arm problems. He missed time two years ago with an ankle injury.

Hoover posted a 1.69 ERA through his first 13 appearances, but was less reliable in the weeks prior to going on the DL, logging a 6.23 ERA in his final 18 games. Opponents are hitting .303 off him and he’s walking 6.5 per nine, though he is striking out 13.7 per nine.

He made two rehab appearances in the minors, tossing a scoreless inning in the rookie-level Arizona League and giving up a run on two hits in Low-A Kane County.

Sunday’s game

When: 10:35 a.m.

Where: SunTrust Park, Atlanta.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks RHP Zack Godley (3-3, 2.58) vs. Braves LHP Jaime Garcia (2-7, 4.55).

TV/Radio: FSAZ/KMVP-FM (98.7), KHOV-FM (105.1).

Godley finished the first half with a typically strong performance. He gave up one run in 5 2/3 innings with one walk and six strikeouts against the Dodgers. He’s gone at least 5 2/3 innings in every start but one, his first outing, when he was pulled after a strong five innings despite a pitch count of just 87.

Godley faced the Braves once last season, giving up seven runs in five innings. 1B Freddie Freeman hit a home run off him in that game.

Garcia, in his first season with the Braves after pitching parts of eight years with the Cardinals, has made all 16 starts and logged 99 innings.

He has been getting hit hard in recent starts, allowing 23 earned runs in his past 22 innings.

He has faced the Diamondbacks seven times in his career, including twice last season, when he gave up nine runs (eight earned) in 7 1/3 innings on 18 hits and four walks.

Sunday’s lineup

Lovullo on D-Backs’ offense: ‘It’s nothing that is overly concerning.’

Though his offense continued to sputter in a loss to the Atlanta Braves on Friday night, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says he still has faith in his group of hitters, believing that they’ll return to their early-season form sooner than later.

The Diamondbacks scored just three runs on Friday and went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position. Since June 28, the Diamondbacks have scored the second-fewest runs (37) in baseball, posting the third-worst batting average (.216) and fourth-worst OPS (.677). They’re 3-9 in that span.

The club is hitting 14 for 88 (.159) with runners in scoring position over the past 12 games. Prior to that, the team was hitting .293 in those situations.

Short hops

Left-hander Robbie Ray will start on Tuesday in Cincinnati and right-hander Zack Greinke will follow him on Wednesday. It will be the pitchers’ first starts since the All-Star break; the Diamondbacks pushed them back to the second series after the break because both made the All-Star team and were candidates to pitch. Ray, however, did not appear in the game in Miami.

*The Diamondbacks had to get creative on Friday night when the phone to the bullpen stopped working. “(Pitching coach) Mike Butcher did his best MacGyver imitation and got it done,” Lovullo said. “He was doing hand signs.” Lovullo said the phones appeared to be working fine on Saturday.
