The worst-case scenario panned out for the Coyotes at the NHL draft lottery Saturday in Toronto as three teams below them in the standings jumped up to the top three picks, pushing the team to No. 7 in the draft order.

New Jersey slotted first with Philadelphia going second and Dallas rounding out the top-three.

Arizona had the third-best odds to win the lottery at 10.3 percent, the same chance as the league’s newest team – the Vegas Golden Knights – but would have picked fourth if the order based on regular-season points remained intact with the Avalanche having the best odds at 18 percent and the Canucks second at 12.1.

But the No. 5 Devils won the drawing for the first pick, the No.8 Stars grabbed second and the No. 13 Flyers ended up third.
